Since all discussion on these forums seems to have evaporated, I would like to invite everybody to come discuss the exploration and development of space at Getting There From Here. Most of you are smarter than I am, so I could definitely use some intelligent discussion of the ideas.

With the current economic problems worldwide, we've seen NASA get a probable re-direction and many people lose heart somewhat about our prospects for a rapid expansion of our space adventures. These conditions have depressed activity on this website and on many others which focus on long-term projects rather than our now more pressing immediate concerns. The far future will arrive someday, and do it on better terms for humans if we plan and prepare for it, but at this moment it is on the "back burner" rather than a priority for most people. I suggest that this is a good time for those who can afford to spend some of their attention here to re-evaluate the most fundamental directions we need to embark in, and also to improve understanding of our aims in ourselves, in young people, and across our planet. Personally I am doing part of this via giving public lectures locally, and I think this "grassroots" approach might be a useful addition to the web, book, media, and educational and governmental institution avenues for spreading our ideas and goals. If we know we're doing a good thing, we shouldn't give up. And I definitely want to thank all the other contributors to this site for their enthusiastic and insightful efforts up to this point!

I prefer to focus on getting a solar system wide infrastructure first, before building starships.

I would actually be surprised if that's the major cause, for two reasons: first, we've had tough economic times for a couple of years now, and we had some excellent discussions last year; second, it costs nothing (but time) to participate in these discussions.

I understand that there are economic uncertainties, but economics are exactly the reasons why we should be pursuing expansion throughout the universe.

I agree that launching an interstellar colonization effort should not be the first step taken. But it is important to know what the long-term goals are. The NASA administrator has said that the goal is to send humans to Mars, but I see that as one (rather early step) in a very long journey to colonizing the galaxy.

A determined, ambitious, step-by-step plan is what is needed, and that's what I'm trying to put together at Getting There From Here. Any input (there or here) is appreciated.
